This new book contains themes about living and dying. Here Whitehouse tries to link our multiple selves through time and histories, to understand how die well or not at all. So, in existential terms, living and dying are one process of becoming authentic, the moment you recognise your mortality, you start to live with intention. However, mortality means many things to many peoples as indeed does death. Sometimes the questions of living and dying hinge what is living and dying within us, memories, pasts and futures, or the complex constructions of the self. The notion that the ‘I’ of identity is continuous, the mutable self and who does that self belong to? Who gets to let that self disappoint and disappear? if I am the same person through time then dying may feel like an ending. The self may be simply a collection of moments, each time a story ends, a role fades, a belief dissolves, something disappears from view, to the end of longing.
